Batwoman is finally making her live-action debut as part of an epic crossover event on the CW this winter. Arrow star Stephen Amell made the announcement at the CW upfronts in New York, saying “We’re incredibly excited to announce that we’ll be doing another crossover event this fall on the CW, and we’ll be introducing a new character. For the very first time appearing, we’ll be fighting alongside Batwoman, which is terrific. The crossover is going to make it to air in December. I need to leave right now and start filming it.”
Mark Pedowitz added to the announcement, saying, “We are adding the city of Gotham into the Arrowverse. This will be another full-throttled, action-packed event.” This version of Gotham will not be connected to the FOX series Gotham, which was just confirmed for its fifth and final season. Batwoman will be joining the crossover event, which is expected to include characters from all of Greg Berlanti’s DC Entertainment series, like The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning. Berlanti’s reach extends beyond the CW; he is also producing the upcoming live-action Titans and Doom Patrol for DC’s newly launched DC Universe streaming service.
Fans have been clamoring for a live-action Batwoman aka Kate Kane, who has previously appeared in the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which premiered on Cartoon Network in 2008. Batwoman also showed up in the direct-to-video animated films Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, where she was voiced by Kyra Sedgwick, and Batman: Bad Blood, this time voiced by Yvonne Strahovski. Bad Blood was the first film that acknowledged Kate Kane’s sexuality, with scenes of her flirting with Renee Montoya at a lesbian bar and openly discussing her dating life with the other caped crusaders.
Casting has yet to be announced, but whoever plays Kate Kane will join several queer female characters in the Berlanti-verse, including Alex Danvers, Sarah Lance, Ava Sharpe, Anissa Pierce, and Grace Choi, to name a few. Depending on how the character is received, Batwoman could potentially spin-off into her own series. Who would you like to see play Batwoman? Share your dream casting in the comments.
