On Friday morning, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich, announced on Twitter that Bill Pullman is officially on board to star in the movie’s sequel, ID Forever Part I. Perhaps even more stunning is that Judd Hirsch is also returning to the cast, cause somebody’s got to carry the victory dance cigars, right?
Pullman’s return to the universe has been talked about and rumored since the sequel’s announcement. After announcing the return of Vivica A. Fox and Jeff Goldblum, as well as introducing Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher, Emmerich took to Twitter to announce his excitement at the return of two of the movie’s most memorable characters.

Personally, I’m just a little more excited that Judd Hirsch is returning to play protagonist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum)’s take-no-guff, cigar-wielding, chess playing father.

To once again refresh your memory of what the movie’s about (aliens) in case you forgot (seriously, aliens):
Explained Emmerich to EW.com, the films will take place about 20-25 years (in human time) after ID4—but that’s only a few weeks for the aliens, who received a distress call from their defeated brethren and high-tailed it through a worm hole (thus the time discrepancy) to get to us and wreak some havoc.
In the intervening years, says Emmerich, humans “have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.” But while humanity has leveled up, so have the aliens, who “also do different things.”
Unfortunately, the outlook doesn’t look too good on whether Will Smith, the Fresh Prince of Welcome To Earth, is coming back.
