In terms of triple-A games that end up getting adapted into feature films, Assassin’s Creed makes sense to me — but Borderlands? That’s … a pleasant surprise. And it’s happening, with noted action film producers Avi and Ari Arad on board.
Borderlands is definitely popular enough to merit a motion picture deal, but it’s also got an undeniably alternative aesthetic compared to shooters like Gears of War or Call of Duty: Black Ops or Battlefield or [insert equivalent here]. Borderlands‘ Mad Max-inspired world could make for an incredible visual vibe on the silver screen, and the popularity of Fury Road probably helped grease the wheels for this film pitch, too.
Although Borderlands still has a “bro” videogame vibe in some ways, it’s also got a lot of super-rad women characters in it (plus, Axton’s awesomeness). The costume design, the world-building, and the jokes have always been the games’ strongest aspects, which is part of why I’m pleasantly surprised to see that Hollywood agreed to this. Adapting a game with interesting world-building into a movie? Nahhh.
Then again, they may still screw it up. So, please, get former Borderlands writer Anthony Burch on board to punch up the script, and then I’ll really be excited.
