Actor Boyd Holbrook, best known for his role in films like Gone Girl and the recent Netflix show Narcos, has been cast as the main antagonist in the sequel to The Wolverine, which will be Hugh Jackman’s final film playing Logan since he first donned those adamantium claws in 2000’s X-Men.
No news has been released giving any details about Holbrook’s character, but rumor has it that he’s a newcomer to the Marvel universe, having never previously appeared in any comic adaptations–and he just might be a brand-new character to the universe itself. As far as we know, though, Wolverine 3 will be following the Old Man Logan storyline–which is set fifty years in the future and follows an aging Logan who has given up the mantle of Wolverine and gone into hiding after heroes have pretty much been wiped from the planet.
Fox has already confirmed an R-rating is an option for the movie if they decide they want to take advantage of it–and given the success of the recent Deadpool, an R-rated Marvel movie isn’t out of the realm of possibility anymore. However, I think these emerging plot details would be a great way to give Jackman the sendoff as Wolverine that he deserves–and also tie up any remaining story that still needs to be told (at least for now).
