The BBC has been understandably tight-lipped about Jenna Coleman’s rumored exit from Doctor Who, which has been making the Internet rounds. New Doctor Peter Capaldi was asked point-blank about his co-star’s Christmastime exit on BBC One’s The One Show, and he teased that he’s not even sure she’ll make it that far.
The whole interview and segment is great and worth a watch, but at around 8:15, presenter Alex Jones hits Capaldi with a point-blank question about what he looks for in a new assistant since Coleman will be leaving at Christmas. He first replies, “I’m not looking for a new assistant,” but then he teases, “I’ve read that she’ll be leaving at Christmas but I don’t even know if she’ll get to Christmas. You’ve gotta just watch and wait and see what happens.”
Of course, that’s pretty different from the BBC’s firm line of not commenting at all, and it’s likely just a tease to sidestep the rumors, but it sure is an effective one. Capaldi! *Shakes fist.*
He then complimented Coleman’s work on the show, because she’s pretty great (despite how you may feel about Clara), saying, “What I can say is she’s absolutely fabulous. The work she’s done this season is extraordinary because she’s been called upon to do thing that I don’t think any other companion has had to do—to show a kind of emotional range—and she’s done it absolutely brilliantly.”
So there you have it! You won’t have to wait long to see what he means, because the series 8 premiere is finally on us tomorrow, so I’ll leave you with Capaldi’s perfect reaction face to being confronted with a rumor:
