Huevos rancheros is a delicious breakfast, but it’s never made me feel like taking down Red Skull. Thankfully, Chris-Rachel Oseland from The Kitchen Overlord worked up a recipe for “Captain America’s Breakfast S.H.I.E.L.D Mark II” which is a variant on huevos rancheros that ends up looking like Captain America’s iconic shield. It doesn’t even require any vibranium, although you do have to make a blue egg.
Here’s the finished product in full view:
To recreate the shield, you will need:
- One tortilla
- One egg
- Four drops of blue food coloring
- 2 tbsp refried beans
- 4 tbsp salsa
- 1 slice white sandwich cheese
- 2-3 tbsp shredded white cheese
Not that I consider myself a connoisseur of the dish, but I didn’t think huevos rancheros had refried beans, but Oseland explains in the blog post going through the recipe:
While your egg cooks, slap a wheat tortilla onto a plate and smear the middle with refried beans. These aren’t absolutely required for Huevos Rancheros (and they don’t add anything to the final look) so if you’re one of those barbarians who doesn’t eat beans, just leave them off. You’re missing out on life, but you made that decision years ago when you turned your back on legumes.
I don’t feel quite as passionately about the subject of refried beans, but it’s been my experience that they make things better, so if you’re going to make this I say go ahead and use them. If you’ve ever prepared huevos rancheros before then you can probably figure out the order of assembly here based on the ingredients and photo, but if you need a step-by-step guide head over to The Kitchen Overlord for the full recipe.

- Oseland also shows you how to make eggs look like Angry Birds
- I tried out some recipes from her Doctor Who cook book. Yes, I ate fish fingers and custard
- I also ate a glazed donut breakfast sandwich from Dunkin’ Donuts, but I was less happy about it
