This is some British-Henry-Cavill-as-Superman-type stuff. But Carey Mulligan‘s a great actress, so if she’s chosen to play Hillary Clinton I won’t complain.
We previously wrote about a shortlist of actresses being considered to play Clinton in James Ponsoldt‘s upcoming biopic Rodham, which focuses on the former Secretary of State/Senator/First Lady  when she was a 20-something lawyer chosen to serve on the committee to impeach President Nixon. Mulligan was nowhere to be found on that list, but now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, she’s the producers’ first pick to star and will soon meet with Ponsoldt to (possibly) hash out a deal. However, THR is careful to state that “insiders close to the production caution that no decision has been made and that others actresses are still in the mix,” so if you were stumping for Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Amanda Seyfried, or Jessica Chastain (Chastaaaain!), you may yet get your wish.
Mulligan’s a great actress, though she’s mostly known for playing these sort of innocent, almost naïve, fresh-faced young women, which is different from the tougher roles Chastain is known for (and way different from how Queen Diplomat, Don’t Mess With Her, Better Than You At Everything Hillary Clinton is seen today, though of course everyone was young once). It’s an interesting casting decision, and I’m a sucker for those. I think I like it.
