During a Jimmy Kimmel appearance earlier this week, Cate Blanchett talked about the Golden Globes, stealing ketchup from Leonardo DiCaprio, and the rumors that she has a role in Thor: Ragnarok.
The exceptionally coy actress, who Mark Ruffalo has hinted will be playing a villain in the Marvel film, had a joking reply when asked by Kimmel to verify the rumors:
Chris Hemsworth is busy, so I’ve been working out […] They’re just substituting one Australian for another. Gender equality! Why can’t you have a female Thor?
I have a feeling Blanchett would enjoy reading some new Thor titles!
Honestly, this interview bummed me out a little; partially because it filled me with futile Thor Blanchett longing, and partially because seeing her and Kimmel joke about Ragnarok reminded me that female-led comic movies are still unlikely enough for the mere mention of a female-led Thor film to seem like a punchline.
But, hopeless dreamer that I am, I’m still holding out hope that someone will make an appearance as new Thor at some point in the MCU. Obviously Blanchett isn’t the most likely casting given Thor’s secret identity in the comics, so I’m classifying this as a clever diversion tactic! Way to try and throw me off the scent, lady, but it’s not gonna be that easy.
