Descendants 3 is on the way to Disney Channel for summer 2019. Cast members Dove Cameron (Mal), Sofia Carson (Evie), Booboo Stewart (Jay), Mitchell Hope (Ben), China Anne McClain (Uma), and Cameron Boyce (Carlos) will all reprise their roles in the third film, and they’ll face off against a new villain in the form of Mal’s father.

Kenny Ortega, who directed and choreographed all three High School Musical movies as well as the first two Descendants movies, will also return to direct the third. Writers Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon, who won the 2016 Writers Guild Award for Children’s Long Form Special for Descendants, will be back, too.

It is perhaps unsurprising that Disney greenlit another Descendants film. Since it premiered, Descendants 2 has been watched by more than 71.5 million total viewers worldwide, and when ZOMBIES was announced, social media wasn’t exactly shy about wanting Descendants 3 instead.

“By adding a modern twist to Disney’s most treasured heritage properties, the world of Descendants has become an instant classic,” said Gary Marsh, the president and chief creative officer for Disney Channels Worldwide. “We’re thrilled that the creative team that conceived and launched this global phenomenon is back to dive deeper into these characters and the imaginative world from which they come.”

The cast members posted about the announcement in the most Disney Channel way.

Honestly, the two Descendants movies are some of the most ridiculous films I’ve ever seen, but the existence of this franchise still makes me ridiculously happy. May the alt-teens of the internet age get all the high school AU musicals they want.
