Wow, that voice is jarring.

Detective Pikachu is set for its first English-language release.

There’s been a lot of Pikachu voices out recently. Ash’s Pikachu spoke in the most recent Pokémonmovie  I Choose You which confused many viewers (it’s immediately met with a “WTF” in this clip that quickly went viral). Apparently Ryan Reynolds is going to voice the Pokémon in the Detective Pikachu movie? Prior to that, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Hugh Jackman and Danny Devito were all named as possible voice actors for the role. The trailer makes it clear that this isn’t Ash’s Pikachu, but a totally different Pikachu altogether which makes it much less confusing/uncomfortable—but definitely not less jarring. Maybe it just takes a while to get used to?

The trailer description writes:

“Get ready to tackle cases in Detective Pikachu, coming to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems in spring 2018! With this tough-talking, coffee-drinking, one-of-a-kind Pikachu by your side, you can talk to witnesses, hunt for clues, and uncover the secrets of Ryme City. The 3DS game as well as a special Detective Pikachu amiibo arrives March 23rd in Japan, North America, and Europe.
