Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Diego Luna has been vocal about his pride as a Mexican in the current political climate and the importance of the movie’s diverse cast, something we’re warmly reminded of again in an anecdote the actor shared on Twitter.
In a post by Tumblr user riveralwaysknew, the fan recounts taking her father to see Rogue One, where he was taken aback by seeing Luna’s character, a hero, speak in a Mexican accent not too different from his own. Don’t mind that sound, it’s just me crying behind my laptop.
In a follow-up post, she posted a video of her father’s reaction in which he calls Luna an “extraordinary actor.” If you head to her Tumblr, it’s also full of others joining her in this celebration and sharing similar stories of viewers being moved by this representation.
Considering how often accents are treated like jokes or punchlines in media (just think about the implications of the phrase “broken English”), hearing different accents celebrated in Rogue One is a truly beautiful thing.
