The Tracking Board reports:

For years, rumors have circled about Disney’s plans to release a third chapter, but series star Hathaway has refuted her involvement with a new sequel on multiple occasions. The plot of Princess Diaries 3 is being kept tight under lock and key, with sources telling me that the film may or may not include Hathaway, with an intention to launch a reboot of the franchise. Debra Chase of Martin Chase Productions is returning to produce the newest outing, after serving as a producer on the previous two.

The original film was based on Meg Cabot’s book series (the most recent of which, The Princess Diaries, Volume XI: Royal Wedding, was release earlier this month) starred Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. The sequel film, The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement, starred Chris Pine and had a screenplay from Shonda Rhimes.

Back in 2012, Andrews told Access Hollywood, “I would never say no because Disney’s so wonderfully clever and inventive, but I would think they’ll stay with just the two because of Annie.”

Odds they’ll just recast her and make this a reboot?

[UPDATE] Entertainment Weekly now says, “Sorry, Princess Diaries fans. Despite reports to the contrary, a source close to Disney told EW that Princess Diaries 3 is not currently in development.”
