Listen, I love George Lucas for creating Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and more, and I love the original trilogy, Ewoks and all—especially Ewoks, haters. Yub nub. But unless The Force Awakens turns out prequel-trilogy-bad, I have no desire to see what Lucas would’ve done with Episode VII, and as he tells it, we were all about to find out until the Disney deal came along.

Selling Lucasfilm was always part of the plan, but speaking to USA Today, Lucas admitted he was actually already developing a third trilogy of Star Wars films. He was planning to make the first one himself and sell Lucasfilm when it was done, since an entirely new trilogy could be a ten year investment if he were involved in the whole thing.

He had a May 2015 release date in mind, but when Disney swooped in to slap some mouse ears on the Death Star—oh no, wait. That was us snarky Internet people and Photoshop—Lucas was all too willing to become a Jedi ghost to watch over events from afar. He told USA Today, “It’s better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself. The time is more important to me than the money.”

He hopes that maybe this time around, he’ll be able to enjoy watching some Star Wars movies, saying, “The only thing I really regret about Star Wars is the fact I never got to see it. I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen. The next one, I’ll be able to enjoy it like anybody else.”

And hopefully now, so will the rest of us.
