Does Makima Die in ‘Chainsaw Man’?

Okay, I’m sure you’re looking for a quick yes or no, but honestly, it’s complicated.

We need to talk about Makima

Okay so Makima, resident hottie and evil antagonist from the series Chainsaw Man, is a complex case. First off, she ain’t human. She’s a devil. A denizen of hell. And although she can be “killed,” she doesn’t really “die” in the “final” sense of the word. So while Black Clover‘s Yami has her beat in the “not dying” competition, she didn’t pull a Stranger Things and die forever like a certain beloved character.

Here’s the thing: Makima made a contract with the Prime Minister of Japan that basically made her unkillable. How? Well, whenever she receives a would-be mortal wound, the damage is transferred to a random citizen of Japan. So, if Makima gets shot in the back of the head (which she does) some poor sap just trying to buy milk at the grocery store ends up with his brains splattered all over the aisle. It’s fucked up, right? The worst part is that Makima has died this way over 26 times. That’s 26 people. The soul flames of 26 unlucky bastards snuffed out in the wink of a demon’s eye. It ain’t right. It’s a messed-up policy on the Prime Minister’s part. Don’t vote for the guy. And you know what else is fucked up? Makima gets her head sliced off by Chainsaw Man multiple times in a fight. Meaning, that somewhere in Japan, some poor sucker’s head just fell off his shoulders while he was tying his shoes.

So, Makima has been causing murder and mayhem throughout the series with zero mortal consequences, that is, until our main protagonist, Denji, gets super sick of her shit. So, he comes up with a plan. A seriously screwed-up Titus Andronicus kind of plan. He gets the drop on her, slices her up with a chainsaw, then cooks and eats her. I’m gonna go scream for a little while, be right back.

Okay, I’m back.

So, Makima is in Denji’s tummy now and all is right with the world…right? Wrong. See, here’s the thing about devils. When they die, even for-real-for-real die, they don’t actually die, they just go back to hell and reincarnate. So, one day, our boy Denji stumbles upon a little girl with black hair and creepy Makima-like eyes named Nayuta. Turns out, she’s the reincarnation of Makima herself. So, what does Denji do? Fire up the grill? Hardly. He adopts her. What a sweetie-pie. The good thing is, devils don’t retain any memories of their previous lives, so little Nayuta doesn’t remember what a deranged fucker she was in her past life. Let’s hope it stays that way. And so far, Makima has been behaving herself. All we know about her really is that she likes dogs, like her previous incarnation. But she doesn’t seem to be showing any penchant for drinking blood or making nasty contracts with humanity. All positive things so far. But this is Chainsaw Man y’all, so I can’t imagine anything is going to stay sweet and innocent for long.
