TV writer Jane Espenson, who has written for Buffy, Firefly, Angel, Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse, and, most recently, Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, has revealed via her Twitter account that a new web series spinoff of Torchwood will star perennial Joss Whedon favorite Eliza Dushku. The not-so-cryptic message?

We have faith in Torchwood: Web of Lies. … It’s tru; there’s an echo of my past work in #Torchwood: Web of Lies.

Get it? Faith from Buffy? Tru Calling (or even True Lies)? Echo from Dollhouse? All of them directly connected to Ms. Dushku? It’s not the most subtle hint, but way more fun than your typical announcement. Now, about this web series …

Espenson also wrote:

There is going to be Torchwood web content. So in addition to the television series there is Torchwood: Web of Lies. Enjoy all the Torchwood brands!

It’s good to see that someone is trying to keep Eliza Dushku employed in the sci-fi/supernatural genre since every time she stars in a series that generates great buzz among fans, it ends up canceled due to low ratings. Is it safe to say that a web series could possibly get Dushku back on television in an already-established series, maybe even Doctor Who? We’d like to think that’s a good possibility. Because they’re sure not going to cancel that. (Unless Eliza Dushku becomes the Ted McGinley of the sci-fi/supernatural TV genre.)

The TV series is currently producing its fourth season, entitled Torchwood: Miracle Day and will premiere in July. No details yet on how the web series storylines will relate to the show or when it begins production.
