Almost Christmas is the story of a dysfunctional family that comes together for the first time since their mother’s death. Written and directed by noted playwright David E. Talbert, who also worked on First Sunday and Baggage Claim, the movie features an all-star cast made up of  Danny Glover, Kimberly Elise, Mo’Nique, Nicole Ari Parker, Gabrielle Union, Keri Hilson, Jessie T. Usher, Omar Epps, John Michael Higgins and Romany Malco.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the ensemble film because, while it does play up the dramatics quite a bit, it’s still a sweet story about a family learning to work out their problems over the holidays. And while there was plenty of sap on screen, this exclusive clip proves those sentiments made their way behind the cameras as well.
The cast and crew weren’t afraid to hide their love and respect for Danny Glover, who has been in 185 films and TV shows including Lethal Weapon, The Color Purple, Shooter and Mozart in the Jungle. “M-I-S-T-E-R. Mister. He is a legend,” Gabrielle Union, who refuses to age at a normal human rate, says in the clip. The same was true for Mo’Nique and her penchant for calling everyone “baby” on the set. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know that this role was practically written for her.
Almost Christmas heads to Digital HD on January 24, and to DVD and Blu-ray on February 7.
