One of the biggest bummers for me while re-watching The Last Jedi for the 4th time was wishing that we could have had more scenes between Rey and Finn. Not just in terms of shipping (because I’m Finn x Everyone), but because their friendship and bond as two broken outsiders was so powerful and compelling for me as a viewer in The Force Awakens. Thankfully, Episode IX looks to be reuniting the dynamic duo for more than just a few scenes.
According to i09, During Awesome Con in DC, where we also found out that John Boyega has been in talks with the MCU about getting so much more richer than he already is, he shared a conversation that he had with Daisy Ridley, after Ridley learned that J.J. Abrams wasn’t splitting them up again.
“I haven’t read the script for Episode IX. But Daisy did shoot me a text saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J., and we’re back together.’ That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again,” Boyega said.
I second, well third, that. Finn and Rey’s relationship is one of my favorites, if we have to go the hetero-route, which let’s face it Star Wars loves to do. But more importantly, I feel like the subtle romance of their story, with them trying to get back to and protect each other, while still shining on their own make them a potentially grand battle couple.
Hopefully, this will also mean Finn getting to be treated as an equal part of the narrative and not being sidelined for Baby Vader and his uncle-father-mother-angst.
The thing that has been really lacking is seeing the whole new trio in action with one another. In fact, I’d forgotten that Poe and Rey hadn’t actually met until Poe introduced himself to Rey at the end of The Last Jedi. I need Finn/Poe/Rey shenanigans like there is no tomorrow.
Star Wars: Episode IX isn’t coming out until December 20, 2019. What character interactions are you looking forward to in Episode IX? I want Rey/Rose fangirling.
