Back when the Magic: The Gathering movie was first announced, Geekosystem’s Victoria (now The Mary Sue’s Victoria, because all your Geeko writers are belong to us) worried that it might turn out like Dungeons & Dragons or Battleship, other tabletop games that got the film treatment. Now we know that won’t be the case, because neither Dungeons & Dragons nor Battleship have nearly enough incest.
Yes, it’s Game of Thrones writer/producer Bryan Cogman who will be writing the Magic: The Gathering movie, which is being produced by Hasbro and comic book movie staple Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past, the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot). There’s no word yet on how exactly Cogman will crack that nut (maybe like the mumblemumblegrumble—Game of Thrones fans, season four episode eight, YOU KNOW), but that’s not exactly surprising—the World of Warcraft movie was done shooting before we found out who even one of the actors is playing. I just know that if Jeremy Irons isn’t there nomming on the scenery, I will be sorely disappointed.
Cogman is the only the latest Game of Thrones alum to branch out into the wider fantasy realm; previously, Thrones director Alan Taylor was tapped for Thor: The Dark World. Soon every single fantasy series will have a Game of Thrones connection. Martin Freeman will be replaced by Maisie Williams in the third Hobbit movie for no reason. The Boxtrolls already stars Isaac Hempstead Wright, but now all the adorable trolls will be replaced by the cannibalistic Thenns. The Princess Bride will release an extended edition where everyone gets slaughtered at Westley and Buttercup’s wedding. The takeover is upon us.
