Unless you’ve been living under a rock without a wifi signal, you know that the state of politics in 2018 is pretty damn bad. Nowhere is that more evident than in Ontario, Canada, where the race for Premier has an unlikely new candidate: General Zod from Superman II. The campaign was created as a joke by Zoltan Hawryluk of Toronto “after a couple of drinks”, who designed the campaign poster and slogan:
Made this so I can put this on my lawn. https://t.co/aud9DpcNHH pic.twitter.com/s2HtO4i4jR

The sign, which features Zod as played by Terence Stamp in the 1980 film, became an unlikely hit thanks to the trio of unpopular candidates running for the Ontario Premier seat in the June 7th general election. This includes incumbent Liberal Kathleen Wynne (who has already conceded the race), Progressive Conservative leader (and brother of scandal-plagued former Toronto mayor Rob Ford) the Trumpian Doug Ford, and the New Democratic Party’s Andrea Horwath.
For those of you not versed in the Canadian political structure (i.e. everyone who is not Canadian), Canada’s government operates as a parliamentary democracy, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the de facto head of government. But Canada is in fact a federation that comprises ten provinces and three territories; each of which get to elect their own heads, known as Premiers. The Ontario province is one of the most densely populated provinces, and it includes the nation’s capital city, Ottawa, and the nation’s most populous city, Toronto.
General Zod’s campaign now has its own Twitter, with a bio that reads “General Zod is dedicated to the subjugation of the people of Ontario. He is a ruthless dictator. In short, a better choice than Doug Ford.” And besides, compared to the policies of Doug Ford, Zod seems like a reasonable choice.
General Zod did try to enslave the Earth but Doug Ford would close down libraries "in a heartbeat". So who is the real monster?#OntarioVotes #DougFord #ONPC

Plus, Zod already has colleagues in mind for cabinet positions:
After I am elected I will appoint this badass to be Minister of subjugation. She may oppress the masses and inflict misery on many, but she would never steal the personal info of thousands of Ontarians to win an election.#onvotes #onelxn #FordNation pic.twitter.com/qcK889VD8p

And Non shall be appointed my Minister of Smiting. He will strike down my enemies and people I just don't like. That includes election cheaters and and the incompetent boob that made him look like a viable option.#OnElxn #onpoli pic.twitter.com/H00xnME3TZ

Now that’s change we can believe in. Ontario, are you ready for Zod 2018?
