The Steven of Rebecca Sugar‘s Steven Universe is based on her own brother Steven, who, incidentally, is now an adult with a beard who works on backgrounds for the show. In that light, it’s easy to see the older members of the Crystal Gems as different incarnations of older sisterhood: the Kind Guardian, the Rough Playmate, and the Inscrutably Cool Older Sibling. That said, they are indisputably all awesome.
