Earlier today, during the Hulu ‘19 Presentation at The Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, they announced their new series orders, which included Marvel and Hulu expanding their partnership with two new live-action series: Ghost Rider and Helstrom.
According to the announcement and Variety, Ghost Rider will see Gabriel Luna returning to play Robbie Reyes as he did on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., except this version will not be connected to storylines from the show, so no need to catch up if you’re behind on that one. The series is executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda (who will serve as showrunner), Paul Zbyszewski, and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb. Female showrunner heading the team? Okay, Marvel, we see you.
“Ghost Rider, also known as Robbie Reyes, is a quintessential antihero, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.”
Helstrom tells the story of Daimon and Ana Helstrom, who are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. “The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity—each with their attitude and skills.” This series looks to be a version of the Daimon Hellstrom character who also goes by the Son of Satan, or Hellstorm, in the comics. In addition to the last name spelling change, it seems like Satana is only going by Ana now, and their father is no longer the devil, but a serial killer? Who knows, but it has a lot of potential.
I’m interested to see where it goes. I think if they actually do the Satan/demon route, that could be more fun, but I would also understand them thinking it might be too over the top, considering the source material can be a bit … hit or miss, depending on the writers, and we already have Sabrina on the Satan beat.
“As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life,” Paul Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner, said according to io9. “Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around, we’re adding some scares to that mix. I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”
Ghost Rider and Helstrom are slated to debut on Hulu in 2020. I’m excited to hear the casting announcements for Helstorm and the rest of Ghost Rider because this is going to be one wild ride, and I’m excited to see that Marvel will have all kinds of content, not just on Disney’s own app. Sorry, Daredevil.
