Well, okay, it was also some stuff her grandfather taught her, but I’m not sure what’s more remarkable in this story, that a seven year old girl managed to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her mother, or that Mrs. Doubtfire is still relevant to seven year olds.

Amira Thronton of Gresham, Oregon was watching television when she hear her mother making strange noises. Her mom Jennifer had a piece of sausage caught in her throat. She told her local ABC news affiliate, “It was pretty scary because there was nobody else here, and I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t, I was just in shock.” Luckily Amira was on hand, and had the idea to administer abdominal thrusts.

“I picked her up three times,” Amira told reporters. “She spit the sausage out.” Which is impressive enough before you see that Amira is about as tall as her mom’s shoulder. Amira says that she was taught to administer abdominal thrusts to choking people by her grandfather, but also that she’s familiar with them from the movie Mrs. Doubtfire, so obviously she’s being raised right from a number of different perspectives.

While the use of abdominal thrusts (or the Heimlich maneuver) has become controversial over time, I’m sure that Amira and Jennifer are both glad of it in this case. Somebody tell Robin Williams and Pierce Brosnan.
