Today, we’ve got a glimpse at the Granger-Weasley family, featuring the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! Yesterday we saw the Potter family’s photos, which looked a lot more grim by comparison. The Granger-Weasleys look much happier to be posing together.
Through Pottermore‘s update about these pictures, we also learn an important fact about the Weasley family: Hermione keeps her maiden name, Granger, and her children take on a hyphenated form of their parents’ names. Their daughter’s name is Rose Granger-Weasley. So, somebody had better update the Harry Potter Wikia page about Ron and Hermione’s family to reflect those last names!
I just did a brief flip-through the epilogue of my copy of Deathly Hallows, and I don’t see any mention of Hermione’s last name or her kids’ last names, so this appears to be an official canonical update given Rowling’s involvement in the writing and production of Cursed Child.
Anyway, that’s Noma Dumezweni as Hermione, Paul Thornley as Ron, and Cherrelle Skeete as their daughter Rose, with everyone decked out in their Cursed Child costumes. Cherrelle Skeete told Pottermore that she’s so excited to embody this new character, about whom we know very little:
I can’t think about how big it is or I’ll just faint. Putting on my uniform, ready to go to Hogwarts, and seeing everyone else in their uniform was exciting. I’ve been looking at it every day in the wardrobe department, waiting for the day I can get on the Hogwarts Express …
Rose is ambitious, obviously her mum is Hermione so she’s got a lot to live up to. I think they’re quite similar in the fact they put a lot of pressure on themselves. And she just wants to do the right thing.
Rowling echoed that sentiment about Rose’s character: “Rose is like her mother, but more secure, more grounded. She was born to wizards and knows her place in the world. Cherrelle plays her perfectly: bossy but deeply lovable.”
Rowling also commended Dumezweni’s performance as Hermione, saying, “She gets Hermione inside out.” Meanwhile, it sounds like Paul Thornley’s Ron will be playing the comic relief, just as Ron did in the books; Rowling described him as “so funny and brilliant in the role.”
Tomorrow, we’ll see a final photo release featuring “two more wizarding characters” from Cursed Child. Who do you hope they’ll be?
