In Hollywood’s long, storied history, there have been plenty of movies that were unafraid to really rack up the body count. Go Compare, a financial services comparison service, crunched the numbers and found out that one fan favorite Marvel movie topped out all other movies in terms of on-screen deaths: Guardians of the Galaxy with 83,871 deaths. Yikes.

The movie’s high count comes from the on-screen deaths of the 80,000 Nova Pilots who formed a blockade to try to stop Ronan’s ship from landing. They stopped him, but only momentarily as the ship powered through all of them, and they each in turn exploded from colliding with the massive cruiser. Then, just like that, 80,000 dead pilots and a massive boost to the movie’s body count.

Guardians of the Galaxy vastly beats out the next movie on the list by an order of magnitude. 2014’s Dracula Untold boasts some 5,687 deaths. Rounding out the podium at third is The Sum of All Fears with 2,922.

The numbers themselves are quite staggering, to be sure. While some may remain dubious at the conditions of of Go Compare’s number crunching (what constitutes on-screen death, etc.), what’s clear is that the violence present in our movies can be quite something to behold. This isn’t necessarily to say we need to lessen it, it’s just that sometimes it’s important to take a step back and consider how prevalent death is, especially as a means of raising the stakes in movies. Perspective, you know?
