After the musical, the companion book, the cast album, the Mixtape, and the Hamildrops, Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced yet another way to enjoy Hamilton. An immersive, interactive, pop-up experience called Hamilton: The Exhibition will open in Chicago this November.
The exhibition will exist in a free-standing tent about the size of a football field, and is being designed by David Korins, who designed the Hamilton set.

The exhibition sounds like a companion to the musical, taking guests through the life of the ten-dollar founding father, following the story arc of the show, but diving into the history in a way the show could only graze. Some of the musical’s producers are involved, but there’s also heavy input from historians from Harvard and Yale. Miranda told the New York Times, “This is much more historically rigorous than two hours of musical theater could ever possibly be, and it really is to satisfy the demand of people who learn a little bit in our show and want to know more.”
The official description promises a really cool, totally immersive experience.
With a dynamic and interactive mix of lighting, sound, multimedia, music and historical artifacts, you will experience how it felt to write the way Hamilton wrote, fight the way Hamilton fought, and live the way Hamilton lived.
Sit at Hamilton’s desk and discover how his work as a trader in St. Croix gave him the skills to create our country’s financial system. Gaze upon the streets of New York with detailed replicas of the city in 1776. Step into George Washington’s war tent as you learn how the Revolutionary Army planned their shocking victory in the Battle of Yorktown.
Basically, it sounds like a museum with the stylized production quality (and some of the music!) of the musical, that also lets you touch and interact with stuff, all with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s voice guiding the audio tour. It sounds perfect.
And if you’re not in the Chicago area, don’t despair. The exhibition will be going on tour when it’s done there.
