Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Harrison Ford had a nice chat with Kimmel regarding Han Solo’s uh… passing. Ford reminds Kimmel of the fact that he’d been trying to get them to kill Solo for 30 years, and now, here we are. As well, Ford shared some neat behind-the-scenes footage that will be packaged with the Blu-Ray edition of The Force Awakens. The footage features a look at when they shot Ford stepping into the Millennium Falcon for the very first time. Call me a sentimental sucker, but I still get a little choked up watching it play out on screen.
Perhaps most intriguing about this interview is the fact that Ford skillfully dodges a few questions about whether he’ll be in any more Star Wars movies going forward. Using his patented sarcastic wit, Ford successfully casts enough doubt on the idea that he won’t be involved in any more Star Wars movies going forward.
It’s important to note that Ford didn’t push for Solo to be killed because he was tired of the character. Quite the opposite in fact; he believed that “Solo’s sacrifice for the other characters would lend gravitas and emotional weight.” He was absolutely right about that–you do remember how you felt when you watched that play out in The Force Awakens, right?
I’m trying my best to not read too much into this (zombie Han Solo, anyone?) but still, the thought is quite tempting. The most likely scenario in which we’d see Solo on the big screen again would probably be either in the Han Solo Star Wars Story spinoff or perhaps even in the Boba Fett-centric spinoff. Of course, there’s also the strong possibility of him appearing in flashbacks and things like that.
My completely unfounded, shot-in-the-dark, I’m guessing about everything, dark horse theory? Episode VIII might be told Godfather 2-style, jumping back and forth between past and “present” to shed some light on how everyone got to where they were at the beginning of Episode VII. That’d allow for not only Ford to return as Solo, but it would also allow them to answer a lot of still-unanswered questions while continuing to move the plot forward.
Either way, it’s obvious Ford isn’t quite done with Star Wars, and it seems Star Wars isn’t quite done with him. And that’s completely fine by me.
