A trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish dropped this week, bringing the iconic orange, swaggery furball back onto our screens for the first time since 2011. The Shrek universe movie—which is finally seeing the light after some serious production rollercoasters—sees Puss realizing that his life of swashbuckling and risk-taking has brought him to the last of his nine lives. And so, he embarks on a quest to try and do something about it, if he can.
A quest that, from the look of the trailer, seems packed with action and colorful characters, as any quest should be. Some are familiar names, others brand new, but here’s who we know so far will be there and who’ll be voicing them.
First and foremost, Antonio Banderas is reprising his role as Puss in Boots, as he did for the 2011 movie, as well as for the entirety of the Shrek tetralogy. Salma Hayek is also returning as Kitty Softpaws, Puss’ fearsome dance battle adversary and partner. And because no adventure is truly an adventure without a trio, the last part of this triangle is newcomer Perro—who is, you guessed it, a dog—voiced by Harvey Guillén from What We Do in the Shadows.
Looking at the movie’s IMDb page though, we see that there’s a stellar cast surrounding our trio. Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman is there, though there are still no details about which role she will take on. Black Widow’s Florence Pugh also appears in the cast list, and if I had to guess from watching/listening to the trailer, I think she’s voicing Goldilocks, who seems to be the head of a famed crime family along with the three bears. John Mulaney also returns to voice acting after his role in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, though his character in Puss in Boots 2 is still a secret.
The cast also features Narcos’ Wagner Moura, The Lost City’s Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Our Flag Means Death’s Samson Kayo, Jane the Virgin’s Anthony Mendez, as well as Ray Winstone—whose most recent role was right beside Florence Pugh in Black Widow, where he played the movie’s villain, Ivan Draykov. All of their characters in Puss in Boots 2 have yet to be disclosed, but we can be sure they’ll be as over-the-top as all characters in the Shrek Universe—or Shrekverse, if you will.
