There are two things that make me very happy about this news: one, that Alan Ball (showrunner of Six Feet Under and True Blood) is in the process of working on yet another series for HBO; and two, Holly Hunter will be among the cast.
Hunter, who recently played the ill-fated Senator Finch in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, is definitely no stranger to television; she played the lead role of complicated Oklahoma detective Grace Hanadarko on the TNT series Saving Grace for a total of three seasons. She also had featured roles in the miniseries Top of the Lake and Bonnie & Clyde.
Ball’s new upcoming show, which is currently untitled, revolves around “a philosophy professor, his lawyer wife, their three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam, and Colombia, and their sole biological child. This seemingly perfect, progressive family is in actuality harboring deep rifts. Then, one of the children begins to see things others cannot. Is it mental illness? Or something else?” Hunter has been tapped to play the family matriarch.
Based on Ball’s previous work, his shows tend to embrace something of an otherworldly or supernatural nature–and judging by this plot summary, it sounds as though this new series will definitely have something not-quite-normal going on.
