While the world is rightfully waiting for Black Panther–I mean what else matters at this point–Infinity Wars will be right around the corner and that not only means the end of this current phase of Marvel films but the end of actor contracts.
Chris Hemsworth, who probably delivered his best performance as Thor last year in Thor: Ragnarok, which was not only a critical and fan darling but also further showed the world why we should all protect Taika Waititi, has two more films in his contract before it is up. Those films are Infinity Wars and the currently titled Avengers 4, which are both filmed already. That’s it. Hemsworth is done unless there is some contract negotiation to be had.
In a previous article by Marykate Jasper, she wrote about Hemsworth’s interview with IGN where he expresses his newfound love for the character and a desire to keep going forward.
“I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished Avengers 4,” Hemsworth said to IGN, “and that’s my contract—my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, ‘Wow, that’s it.’ Two or three films ago I was like, ‘Okay, a couple more.’ I was enjoying it, but I was like … I felt a little restricted.”
“And after this last experience with Taika,” he continued, “and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times—even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.”
“If I had the opportunity to [play Thor] again, I think I’d love to,” Hemsworth said. “I also think there’s an appetite for it now, or there’s a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we’ve kind of broken the mold a bit.”
The other difference between then and now is that Hemsworth is now one of the top stars in the Marvel franchise with the success of Ragnarok. Before Taika took the helm, the Thor movies had fans but it was certainly not held up as among the best. Ragnarok changed things, outgrossing DC’s Justice League and showing off Hemsworth’s comedic chops. He is a much more valuable star to them now, and that means they have to pay up to keep him.
In a recent interview with USA Weekly, Hemsworth spoke about how it once seemed like a neverending story and now it is getting more and more real that there is an end. “It’s sort of a scary thought […] and now it’s potentially finishing.” According to Hemsworth in his conversation with Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios said, “Look, we just have to concentrate on (Avengers) now.”
“So who knows?” says Hemsworth. “There are 76 cast members in these two Avengers films. They will be the biggest films of all time, far bigger than my character. It’s a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen.”
Until then, we can only hope that what we get from these next two Avengers movies does justice to the characters we love (and have tolerated), especially since some are probably not going to make it out alive-contact or not contract.
If we are gonna stop dropping Avengers cast members who from the A-Team, are you willing to lose? (coughHawkeyecough)
