One of the Best Movies of 2024 Is Finally Streaming on Max

The multi-genre neo-noir film Love Lies Bleeding received major adulation from critics at the time of its release; however, it didn’t necessarily translate to a strong box office performance.

Four months after its theatrical release in America, the film is now available to stream on Max. The queer romantic thriller stars Kristen Stewart as a reclusive gym manager who falls in love with a rising bodybuilder (Katy O’Brian), and how the two get entangled in the mess of the former’s crime family forms the crux of the story.

The supporting cast includes Ed Harris, Dave Franco, Jena Malone, and Anna Baryshnikov. The movie is Rose Glass’ second directorial effort after her 2019 debut release, Saint Maud. Revered as a promising director, she is noted for her impressive short film collection, which includes the likes of The Silken Strand, Room 55, and Bath Time.

Love Lies Bleeding received commendable reviews following its release, with Stewart and O’Brian’s performances being singled out. Glass’ ability to marry an emotionally charged plot with shades of dark comedy was highlighted as the most redeeming quality of the movie, and these factors could (and should) contribute to making the A24 film a major streaming success. During the promotions, Glass cited yesteryear erotic films such as David Cronenberg’s Crash and Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls as major influences on her second movie.

After stints in various TV shows and movies, Love Lies Bleeding has played a critical role in catapulting O’Brian to mainstream popularity. She is a part of the ensemble cast of Twisters, which is currently running in theaters, and will be seen in the next installment of the Mission: Impossible film franchise.

Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart’s next big-screen appearance will be in Love Me, a post-apocalyptic film in which she will co-star with Steven Yeun. The movie is expected to release sometime in early 2025. Her other upcoming releases include Michael Angarano’s Sacramento, which co-stars Angarano, Michael Cera, and Maya Erskine with Stewart.
