For those worried about what would happen to James Gunn after he was fired from Marvel/Disney due to an alt-right attack campaign that weaponized Gunn’s old gross tweets, you can breathe easy knowing he has found a new home at Warner Bros.
It’s long been kicked around the rumor mill that Gunn might get picked up by the DCEU, and today, according to io9, it’s official that Gunn will be work with Warner Bros on the next the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise.
This is huge news because Gunn was responsible for making two of the Marvel’s most surprisingly successful films, the first two installments in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Considering what he did with that ensemble movie, this is a brilliant move by Warner Bros. because if anyone can possibly salvage that Suicide Squad mess, it is probably Gunn.
Per io9, “he’ll have a completely new take on the property” and is looking to both direct and write this upcoming film.
This is still a developing story, but it will definitely make shockwaves. Many influential people online, including the cast of the Guardians movies and other Marvel cast members, publicly supported Gunn after his following. Even some people who do think the jokes Gunn made years ago were awful and that he shouldn’t have been hired to begin with are conflicted as to how the firing happened. A propaganda witch hunt by the literal worst the alt-right has to offer is a mess and that Disney shouldn’t have given into their demands so quickly.
For me, I have always been honest about my mixed feelings about Gunn and what went down, but I never once thought that this scandal would be the end of his career, and honestly, his initial taking of responsibility should be noted by others who get caught up in scandals. Because as Beyonce once said: “best revenge is your paper” and right now Gunn is about to collect a lot of paper.
Is it possible this might lead to some blowback for Warner Bros? Considering they and Disney both employ the likes of Johnny Depp in different capacities, neither of them are free from the drama of hiring men with baggage. I only hope that Gunn, unlike someone like Aziz Ansari, will continue to promote liberal ideas.
As for this Suicide Squad movie … I mean if we must. DCEU is definitely taking risks, considering their upcoming projects, both in terms of film and their new streaming service which may pay off in the long run. But if it Warner Bros.’ gamble pays off, it’ll be a huge coup for the DCEU, a powerful statement of support for Gunn, and middle finger to Marvel by grabbing one if their biggest talents.
Well, what do y’all think? Is this the outcome you expected?
