Just like Dame Helen Mirren and Sally Field before him.

Here’s your unexpected moment of zen today. Last night on Late Show, Jeff Daniels followed in the footsteps of Helen Mirren and Sally Field when he planted a great big kiss right on Stephen Colbert’s lips. Friends, I had to do a double-take because I thought I was writing some slashfic for a moment. Excuse me.

Anyway, Daniels did indeed follow in the footsteps of some amazing women by becoming part of a trend that seems to have strangely taken Late Show by storm: it just seems like everybody wants to make out with Colbert. Maybe it’s totally a Scott Pilgrim/Knives thing. “I’ve kissed the lips that kissed you!” Yeah, totally.

As adorable as Daniels’ kiss is with Colbert, it doesn’t beat how stunned and flustered Colbert gets when Dame Mirren gives him her kiss. From that point on, the interview is just shot; there’s just no way they can get back to any semblance of normal. You can watch all that below.

Whatever it is that’s making people want to kiss Colbert, we hope it never ends.
