Jeremy Irons’ Alfred was one of the few characters who managed to come out of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice without looking too ridiculous, and now we’ll get a chance to see if Irons’ luck holds up. In an interview with Showbiz411 yesterday, the actor confirmed that he’ll be returning as Alfred for Justice League.
As disappointed as I was by Dawn of Justice, I did appreciate most of the performances; Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Amy Adams all seemed to be doing the best they possibly could to salvage an offensive, confusing, and bloated script. I thought Irons was great as well, and that he was one of the very few actors in the film whose performance didn’t seem in constant contest with the script. Dawn of Justice presented a hands-on, tech savvy Alfred, and I actually appreciated that take on the character, and how the movie managed to make its Alfred distinct from iconic previous versions of the role. All of that being said, I have mixed feelings on learning Irons is definitely reprising the role—I’m excited to see more of his Alfred, but I don’t trust Zack Snyder to depict an Alfred I’ll appreciate two films in a row. If there’s any character I don’t want to see put through Snyder’s cynical, violent lens, it’s Alfred Pennyworth.
Justice League is currently filming in London, and is confirmed to star Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Jason Momoa. Supporting roles will include J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Queen Mera, and Willem Dafoe in an as-yet-unknown role (although it’s been confirmed that Dafoe won’t be playing a villain in the film).
