Jessica Chastain Was Paid Only a Small Fraction of Matt Damon’s Salary for The Martian

Jessica Chastain took to the Huffington Post to refute rumors that she had been paid $7 million for her role in The Martian. She in fact made less than a quarter of that. Compare that with her co-star, Matt Damon, who apparently made about $15 million. Sorry, who keeps saying there’s no such thing as a wage gap again?

As we say time and again: yeah, this is a lot of money, and they are movie stars so it works slightly differently–that does not change the fact that the gender wage gap is something we all face across all industries. Women in Hollywood, just like women elsewhere, are expected to do more, get less for it, and be happy about it.

The argument can be made that Chastain isn’t as big a name as Damon, but as Indiewire so astutely points out: she’s a two-time Oscar nominee. She’s absolutely not getting the recognition she deserves.
