We could all use a laugh right now, and Jon Stewart, though retired from The Daily Show, is still here for us in our time of need. He dropped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to mock Donald Trump’s rapid-fire, poorly-thought-out executive order governing style.
As usual with Jon Stewart, though, he also worked in a more substantive message: Donald Trump will highlight our democracy’s greatness not by his own actions, but in its resilience in surviving his authoritarian tendencies. That will come down to the people, who have come together in recent days to push back against his agenda on a large scale. It will be hard to keep it up—and there’s nothing funny about the terrible effects these orders have had so far and will have in the future—but it’s also the only thing standing between us and a dictatorship.
If we come out of all of this without the worst case scenario coming to pass, it won’t be because we were wrong about Donald Trump. It will be because he underestimated us.
