One person’s voice was noticeably absent from all the commotion last week over the new Daily Show host’s Twitter activity: current Daily Show host/institution, Jon Stewart. The show came back from its break last night, and Stewart finally got the chance to address concern over Trevor Noah.

Sidestepping actually wading into the issue of whether or not Noah’s tweets should be considered offensive, because that’s really something every person ultimately gets to decide for themselves, Stewart asks only that we let him earn our trust and respect due to his hosting abilities on the show… or not.

It’s possible that Noah will be great—Stewart seems to think so. It’s also possible that he won’t be, but Jon Stewart, ever the voice of reason, wants us to at least give his Daily Show hosting capabilities the chance to disappoint us—or not—as host of the Daily Show.
