I must admit, I’d never heard of NTSF:SD:SUV:: before I read that Karen Gillan would be joining its cast as her first post-Doctor Who TV project. But now that I know what it is—and that Gillan will be in it—I’m more than a little intrigued.
For those, like myself, to whom NTSF:SD:SUV::* is just a bunch of letters, here’s the run-down: It’s is a live-action police procedural spoof that airs as part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. In addition to Gillan, it stars Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, Brandon Johnson, Martin Starr, Kate Mulgrew, and Rebecca Romijn as members of the eponymous international crimefighting agency. Gillan will join that team as Daisy, the resident tech expert. (I’m sure being on Doctor Who has gotten her used to technobabble, right? I can’t imagine she’ll get to say anything as cool as “It goes ding when there’s stuff,” though.)
Per Digital Spy, “The show’s third season will see the team kidnapping an alien, having to fake their own deaths and undergoing face-swapping surgery.”
That… doesn’t sound very different from what one might find on one of the crackier episodes of Doctor Who, really. Or even some of the not-so-cracky episodes. The whole “kidnapping an alien” thing is positively mundane by Doctor Who‘s standards. And fake dying (well, non-permanent real dying) was more Rory’s thing than Amy’s, but Amy sort-of-died a few times herself.
I think she’ll fit in just fine.
*The title stands for “National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle,” if you’re curious.
