Earlier this week, we told you Star Trek 2 star Karl Urban had spilled the proverbial beans about some very top-secret character news – he gave away the name of Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain. It was an accident and, as you would imagine, Urban feels pretty awful about it. Hit the jump to find out what exactly caused the slip and what Comic-Con information he may have inadvertently given away in the process.
While promoting his new film Dredd, Urban talked to a reporter about Cumberbatch. “He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.” Big whoops.
So how did that happen when we all know J.J. Abrams is keeping a tight lid on Star Trek 2 production?
Urban told Coming Soon it was plain, human fatigue. “I’m really not at liberty to discuss anything about Star Trek. All I can say is that I did that interview after a 22-hour flight from New Zealand,” he said. “I literally hopped off the plane into the interview.”
Fans were surprised to learn there wasn’t going to be a big showing of the project at Comic-Con this weekend. It certainly seemed like a missed opportunity until Urban kept talking.
“I can promise you that before the end of Comic-Con, some exclusive Star Trek footage, it’s going to come out,” he said. “You’re going to find it. It’s going to come out.”
Odd phrasing, to be sure, but Urban later clarified that the footage we’re all dying to see would make its way to us via a secret YouTube video. Keep a sharp eye, Trekkers.
