“So many people wish for something like this. I still don’t believe I’m doing it.”
Kelly Marie Tran’s performance as Rose Tico is one the highlights of The Last Jedi. Her genuine sweetness and kindness and desire for justice were perfect. It was also amazing to get some good Asian representation in the Star Wars universe after literally decades. Since the universe borrows so much from Asian philosophy, it really is about time.
What the clip highlights as the reason Tran was chosen: her chemistry read with John Boyega, who I truly believe has chemistry with everyone in the universe. Even in the screen test, they bounce off each other really well, and it pays off in the remarkable chemistry the two have in the film.
Sadly, one of the things you see when you look at the video is the comments calling her “the worst character since Jar-Jar Binks.” Guys. Guys. Do you remember Jar-Jar Binks? At no point in the entire film does Rose do anything like … stick her tongue into an engine or step on poop or be a tired semi-racist stereotype. Can you have real issues with the way Rose and Finn’s story was integrated into the story—of course! I do myself. Calling her the worst character since Jar-Jar?
Yousa crazy.
