At this year’s GLAAD Media Awards, Scandal‘s Kerry Washington will be receiving the Vanguard Award for making a significant difference in the promotion of equality, and because Kerry Washington is a BAMF. But mostly the first thing.

Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD president and CEO, said that Washington has “consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people.” And not only has Washington starred on LGBTQ-inclusive shows, but she’s also taken part in GLAAD’s Spirit Day and their anti-bullying campaigns, and fought for marriage equality in America and LGBTQ rights in Russia. Said Ellis, “Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds.”

In recent years, the Vanguard award has gone to Jennifer Lopez, Josh Hutcherson, Kristin Chenoweth, and Drew Barrymore. Washington will receive her award at the Los Angeles GLAAD Awards ceremony on March 21. For the full list of nominees (and ones we’re particularly stoked about), click here.
