In a new featurette for Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Justin Lin, and Chris Pine talk about Elba’s never-before-seen character Krall, “the Federation’s most deadly new enemy.”
“Krall is very complex,” says Elba. “When you meet him you go, ‘Oh, he’s our bad guy.'” The actor promises a memorable character adding that, “watching the Enterprise crash and burn felt like I was destroying a legacy.”
On creating the villain, Lin says “I wanted a character that is there to deconstruct the Federation’s ideals, but to do it in a way that he has a very valid philosophy.” Pegg, who co-wrote the film, also emphasizes their efforts to give Krall “a complex reason for his bad guy-ness.” Pine calls him “the soloist, he is the nihilist.”
Considering one of the film’s taglines is, “This is where the frontier pushes back,” and Elba has previously called the character “groundbreaking for the franchise,” it’s safe to say we can expect a mix of “classic bad guy” (there’s more than one clip of Krall throwing Captain Kirk around) and empathetic villain (Idris Elba’s lingering stares).
What do you think of Krall so far?
