Star Wars: The Last Jedi took home the award for Best Movie for Grownups at the annual American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Movies for Grownups Awards. The Awards honor films by and for people 50 or older, and the winners are selected by the editors of AARP Magazine.
Stars Mark Hamill and Kelly Marie Tran presented the award to director Rian Johnson. As part of his introductory speech, Hamill said, “One of the things I like about the films is the intergenerational aspect. Children that were fans of the original films are grown now and sharing them with their children and even their grandchildren. It’s amazing to me.”
Given the fact that older characters, including Leia, Luke, and Han Solo, have had such prominent and complex roles in the new trilogy, it’s perhaps unsurprising that AARP decided to honor The Last Jedi. “In an industry that’s too often preoccupied with youth,” AARP wrote, “the film respects the past, taking us back to fond memories—yet it is also of the moment, innovative, vital and in touch with a vast public. And speaking of touch, Mark Hamill has just the right one as an older and wiser Luke Skywalker. In Jedi, the actor and his character passed the baton to a new generation.”
