They say that truth is stranger than fiction. It can also more powerful, poignant, and inspiring. Director Rodrigo Garcia (In Treatment) has partnered with Indigenous Media to create a digital documentary series called Lives of Women, which focuses on the individual stories and lives of real-life women from all backgrounds and walks of life. Check out the trailer above!
In addition to conceiving the series, Garcia also directed the first seven episodes, each shot by cinematographer Meena Singh, and though each one no longer than 1:14, they pack a punch. The rest of the episodes will be directed by Kestrin Pantera. Here’s the official description:
An intimate portrait series that showcases the voices, thoughts, and experiences of women as shaped by their past choices, present, and hopes for the future. These stories are equal parts happiness and hope, nostalgia and heartbreak. These are the voices of the women who make up our world.
One of the first ones, featuring the story of Stephanie M., is the story of a woman who talks about growing up without knowing her father:
All the videos are like this, short snippets from a life, and in a world where it feels like women’s voices are being erased or silenced, it’s even more important to ensure that women’s stories are being told. Projects like Makers highlight the stories of famous and/or high-achieving women. Lives of Women turns its focus toward ordinary women and their unique lives and perspectives. They may not be flashy, but they are no less important.
You can check out the whole series on YouTube, and you can follow the project on social media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
