March 10th is recognized throughout geek circles as “Mario Day” due to the abbreviation for March (Mar) and the number “10” looking a lot like the heroic plumber’s name. Similar to May the 4th being “Star Wars Day” because of it sounding like may the force, the day itself is just an excuse to have some fun and share your love for an iconic fictional character.
But if you’re one of those folks who think outside the box in regard to making some extra cash, you could use the day as an excuse to sell a limited edition item that fans would, well, have a good laugh about. All you need is a gallon of milk that has MAR 10 as the expiration date and you could offer it up as “Limited Edition Mario Milk” for … wait, $1,000???
Where the heck did this milk post even come from?!
The earliest post I can find of this so-called limited edition milk is over on Reddit from back in 2018. The post highlights the $240 sales post, but as we can see from Twitter user Curio Kujo (who is @/CursedMario, lol, what a perfect handle for this situation) there are, at least, three more attempts to sell milk as some collector’s item because of the MAR 10 date. While it’s easy to stare in awe at that $1000 sales price, I can’t stop giggling at the $100 milk because of the extra incentive of selling it at the “Best Offer.”
Now you might be asking why, oh why, would anyone think this made any sort of sense. I’ll tell you why. It’s because of Mario’s history with milk. You see, there was a time when Mario struggled to clear a jump in Super Mario 64—Whomp’s Fortress, to be specific. The solution? Drink milk. It helps you grow better than any mushroom could.
Clearly, these sellers were just tapping into the nostalgia of an old milk commercial. There’s no way there were doing it in a desperate attempt to scam some folks out of their coins. What, are we just supposed to go to the grocery store and buy milk that does NOT have the MAR 10 stamp on it?
This is the most Friday thing I’ve ever seen and I love it.
Okay here’s something you can actually do to celebrate Mario Day
From what I can gather, Nintendo has been celebrating Mario Day since 2016. From silly videos like the one posted above to partnering with Google to have Mario included in Google Maps, the company always does a little something on March 10th. This year is no exception, so here are some things to celebrate Mario that do not include expired milk.
- Several Mario games are currently on sale until March 13th!
- New Lego expansions and characters were announced for later this year, including my girl Princess Peach!
- Super Nintendo World was announced here in the U.S. with its grand opening in Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023!
And of course, lots of cool art, cosplay, and photo edits all throughout the fandom.
No spoiled milk is necessary to enjoy Mario, but, well, I’m not your Mama Peach, Bowser Jr., so do what you want.
