We’ve been hearing bits and pieces about Marvel’s “All-New, All-Different” universe, but now the preview solicitations have gone out to comics retailers for 45 new titles, and because we live in The Digital Age, they’ve already hit the Internet. The “All-New, All-Different” universe is really living up to its name! Not only that, but it’s providing some really interesting vehicles and stories for Marvel’s female and minority superheroes.
Here’s what I’m most excited about:
Spider-Woman #1: JESSICA DREW IS PREGGERS. What? Who’s the father? But more importantly, how does she get in and out of her uniform? I love Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew, and I have to say that, while it’s a little out of left field, I’m intrigued by this “parent by day, hero by night” angle. Apparently, she’s going to be a single mom, too, so it’ll be an interesting experience for her. I know that there are plenty of women out there who don’t like to see female characters “reduced to” their reproductive bits, but personally, I love stories about mothers. Especially when those mothers are women who have extraordinary lives outside of parenthood. What’s more, pregnancy is a uniquely feminine experience that isn’t portrayed in all its nuance enough in stories. Now, this has an all-dude creative team, so we’ll see how this gets handled, but I’m excited to find out!
Guardians of the Galaxy #1: KITTY PRYDE HAS ASSUMED THE MANTLE OF STAR-LORD! What?! I KNOW. Also, The Thing is on the team. And also Venom, apparently? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE. I don’t know, but I’m excited about it. Especially about Kitty Pryde. Those X-Men have been keeping her down too long – her running a team has been a long time coming. Then again, according to the tagline, The raccoon’s in charge. So this might not be as cool as I thought. Also, WHERE THE HELL IS GAMORA?! Is there a rule that the Guardians can only have one lady on it at a time? I’m excited about this, but I’ve also got some side-eye on stand-by just in case.
All-New Wolverine #1: I’m just gonna say it. I’M SO SICK OF WOLVERINE. Seriously, over him. How did he become such “A Thing” anyway? He might have been cool a while ago, but then…Wolverine Overkill, and suddenly I couldn’t care less about the character. You know what character I have always found interesting? X-23. Well, now X-23 is Wolverine, apparently. I suddenly have a reason to care about Wolverine again! Thank you, Marvel.
Spider-Man #1: MILES MORALES IS IN THE MAIN MARVEL UNIVERSE NOW! But that doesn’t mean that there’s no Peter Parker. However, Miles Morales will be heading up Spider-Man, while Peter Parker will have a separate book in The Amazing Spider-Man. Whatever, yo. Miles Morales doesn’t need your superfluous adjectives! He’s just Spider-Man. Period. *drops mic* So now, the Marvel comics universe has two Spider-Men. Hopefully they’ll be able to cover a lot more friendly neighborhoods now!
Silk #1: SILK IS A CRIMINAL NOW! At least, that’s what it looks like from this cover and tagline. There are several heroes from Marvel that seem to be turning to crime in the new universe. But as this one is focused on a female character, this is the one I’ll be keeping my eye on!

Now, one thing that isn’t so “new” and “different” is the fact that there are way more men on these books than women. And one woman, G. Willow Wilson, has two books (which is great, as I love her, but I also wish there were different women writing). But we do have the showrunning team from Agent Carter taking over Captain Marvel, and we’ve got books starring female protagonists like Scarlet Witch, Spider-Woman, and Silk.
Plus, there’s some great talent all over the place, including guys like Jason Aaron and Brian Michael Bendis who are really great at including nuanced women in the things they write. Here’s to a new day at Marvel! I’ll be adding LOTS of new titles to my pull list this fall!
