Matt Smith as Loxias Crown in Morbius walking on the subway

Matt Smith Was Also Confused by ‘Morbius’ Character Loxias Crown

Matt Smith being in Morbius seems to be the one bit of information my brain cannot retain. I love Smith, he’s one of my favorite actors, and yet every time the trailer for Morbius pops up and I see him, I get excited because I have completely forgotten he’s in this. But his involvement in the movie clearly hasn’t helped him understand his character.

Talking with Screen Rant, Smith explained that he wasn’t quite sure about his character’s history or where he lands in the larger scope of Marvel and that he just took the script has his “Bible” because he still is a bit confused by it all. He told them,

The truth is, I wasn’t aware of the great big history of the character in many respects. Because the script I was presented with doesn’t really delve into the past of him – or indeed the future. And isn’t someone else playing him? It’s all a bit confusing to me, to be honest with you. I took as my Bible just the actual script, is the honest truth of it. And it was all a bit odd whether it was Loxias [Crown] or not. I’m still not quite sure, to be honest.

That’s not rare with these movies. There are so many different versions of comic characters that sometimes, it is going to be strange to understand what version of the character you’re taking on. But it is a bit telling that the script didn’t really outline exactly what Morbius held for Matt Smith’s character, whether he’s Loxias or not.

Is Morbius confusing then?

While we don’t know anything yet about the movie outside of the trailers, there isn’t a set tone for Morbius that all of us can agree on. One minute, it looks absolutely wild and the next looks like a funny addition to the Sony world of Spider-Man. But it also isn’t exactly a bad thing that Smith is a bit confused on his character.

Smith could be trying to hide what he does know about Loxias Crown or they could have purposely left the character up for interpretation in the film, since we don’t know where the future of Sony’s Spider-Man villain world is heading. It is a bit telling that he said that the script didn’t really give him an answer either way about his character, but I like the idea of Smith approaching the role as just what is written, because the deeper you get into the comic lore of these characters, the more it will change what you’re doing for that specific version of the character.

If he is, in fact, the villain Hunger (as Loxias Crown is in the comics), the character is super fast, has super strength, and is an imposing threat to Spider-Man and his friends, and I hope we’d get to see more of him in future Spider-Man movies. But that we’ll have to wait and see about.

So, I’m excited to head to the theater to see Morbius and suddenly remember that Matt Smith is in this, and hopefully watching him as maybe Loxias Crown in the movie will help explain the entire arc of his character.
