Megan Fox on Supporting Her 9-Year-Old’s Gender Expression: “My Child Is So Brave and I Know That They’ve Chosen This Journey for a Reason”

Megan Fox is going through a cultural resurgence, from media retroactively dealing with the sexist and biphobic ways she’s been treated to her new film and television ventures, and her very public relationship with rapper-person Machine Gun Kelly. (We respect her choices, but we do not understand it.) However, one of the things Fox has excelled at the most is being a supportive and caring mother, especially to her nine-year-old, Noah, who she has mentioned, in the past, enjoys wearing dresses.

In her Glamour UK cover interview, she discusses Noah wearing dresses and looking at books that discuss the gender spectrum as a result: “Some of the books are written by transgender children. Some of the books are just about how you can be a boy and wear a dress; you can express yourself through your clothing however you want. And that doesn’t even have to have anything to do with your sexuality.”

“So, from the time they were very young, I’ve incorporated those things into their daily lives so that nobody feels like they are weird or strange or different,” added Fox. Still, like any parent, she feels a level of fear about how hard the path can be for a queer person, as she is bisexual herself that is probably something she understands. Plus, seeing how transphobia has been so rampant recently, it is hard not to worry about your loved ones.

In an attempt to protect Noah, Fox explains that she sends them to a school with parents who “are similar in their beliefs” and tries to keep them away from the internet in order to protect them. “I knew when they were very young, I wanted to try to protect them however I could, especially limiting their exposure to the internet,” Fox said. “So far, we’ve done a really good job and we maintain their innocence in a lot of ways, but I know I can’t protect them forever.”

“Though I do have a child that suffers. So, I have a lot of worries about that, because I just wish that humanity was not like this,” she continued. “Although my kid is so brave and my child is so brave and I know that they’ve chosen this journey for a reason. It’s just hard, as a mom.” As a bisexual woman myself, the love that my mother has given me is unparalleled. To know that she has my back and support in the face of homophobia means everything to me. It is the kind of love and support that can change the path of a kid’s life—an adult’s life, even.

I can hear people wondering why she even brings this up if she wants to keep her child’s life private, but I think it is important for other parents, and other children, to know that this is something anyone can experience—to know that there are ways as a mother to protect your kids, and as children, that being loved and supported should be the expectation. That’s what an actual cool mom is like.
