In her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille award at last night’s Golden Globes, Meryl Streep was crystal clear about where opinions fall on recent events. She excoriated not only Donald Trump for his mocking of a disabled reporter (which actually happened, on tape, no matter how many times he lies about it), but all the cold-hearted lack of empathy that goes along with his political rise.
Seriously, Trump supporter Ann Coulter tried to defend the action Streep brought up specifically as just a general mocking impression of a (her word, not mine:) “retard,” as if that is somehow preferable. That is the kind of person who got Trump elected, and it’s the kind of callous nature Streep was speaking out against.
Remember that when you see the ridiculous “This is why Trump won” responses to this speech. What they’re really saying is, “Common decency is a trait held only by Trump’s opponents,” and, well … yeah, that’s the point. It’s not something his supporters should be proud of.
