How 'Monster Prom' Got Me Ready For Hot Girl Summer

Between Elden Ring and Pokémon, I have been enjoying discovering new video games—especially indie games that allow me to have fun times and support a smaller creative company. Well, I was introduced to the monster dating sim game called Monster Prom, and I had to share.

In the game, you have three weeks until Monster Prom, and you have a limited amount of turns to impress and woo one of the eight hotties available to you.

The four player-characters are Oz (the personification of fear), Amira Rashid (fire djinn), Brian Yu (zombie), and Vicky Schmidt (Frankenstein’s monster). However, you also have the option to change the names and pronouns of the characters before playing. The gender and pronouns you pick do not change or impact the people you are able to romance—which feels good to see.

The monsters that you are able to woo are the jock himbo werewolf Scott Howl, emo vampire Liam de Lioncourt, evil capitalist gorgon Vera Oberlin, chaotic fire demon Damien LaVey, sexy ghost Polly Geist, evil royal mermaid Miranda Vanderbilt, an Eldritch monster Zoe, and Calculester Hewlett-Packard, a computer robot. The game has over 1,300 possible events and 47 secret endings, all of which you can unlock with friends.

While you can play in single-player or multiplayer, it is a lot more fun as a multiplayer game because there is something just really fun about the reality that only one of you might actually make it. The original game has been out since 2018 but came out on the Nintendo Switch in 2020, and the sequel, Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp was released recently, and I have deeply enjoyed it.

I enjoy the diversity of body types, the fun sexy humor, and the fact that sometimes you can lean into your more devious sides. As someone who feels anxious about dating and the idea of mingling, this dating sim, with all of its fun and awkwardness, reminded me of the joy of failure, especially when meeting someone new. I have not played a whole lot of dating sims, but this one just reminds me of how much I enjoy dark paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and messy characters.

For super gamers, I don’t know if this is for y’all, but for those who just love fun games and want something light to play, especially between other stuff, this is a perfect little romp of a story.
