The fourth episode of Moon Knight has hit Disney Plus, and fans are clamoring for answers more than ever.
Just when we think we’ve figured out Moon Knight, it throws a wrench in what we thought we knew. In the most recent episode of the hit Disney Plus series, fans were gifted with a new twist to Marc Spector and Steven Grant’s story: An asylum.
Just when things got dire for Marc, and it seemed as if Harrow had shot and killed our hero with two episodes to go, we suddenly see Marc come to in an all-white asylum, with Layla there as a patient. Suddenly, everything we thought we knew about Marc and his journey has been thrown into the air along with Marc.
Harrow is still there, as we see Ethan Hawke as a doctor who is working with Marc and trying to help him, but the entire sequence is a lot all at once for the audience. And for Marc and Steven. So, how does it all tie into the history that we know from the comics?
Asylums in the ‘Moon Knight’ comics
There are two asylums that have played a part in Marc Spector’s story in the past. First, there is the Putnam Psychiatric Hospital, where Marc witnessed a man get murdered, and that trauma played a major part in Marc developing DID.
And then, there’s the Jeff Lemire run of Moon Knight—where Marc, Steven, and Jake all find themselves in an insane asylum where they have no powers, and instead, have medical records that explain their history with mental illness. But this one’s an illusion where Marc thinks that he made up his life as Khonshu’s Avatar.
So, is this an illusion in the show?
Harrow has some of the power that Ammit has, and that could mean that he has the power to create an illusion to try and use Marc and Steven to his advantage. That seems a bit more likely with the inclusion of the Egyptian God Taweret at the end of the episode.
But is this illusion going to be something easy for Marc and Steven (and maybe even Jake?) to get out of? Harrow is stronger than them normally, and now, without the power of Khonshu on their side, he probably has the ability to hurt them a lot easier than before.
What will happen with only two episodes left?
We have exactly two episodes left of Moon Knight and this really does change what we know of the series. How long are we going to be in the asylum? Is this when we get to meet the third alter, Jake Lockley? Or is this just a set up for the future of Moon Knight in season 2 (or a movie somewhere else down the line)?
All of these questions are now just added to the other questions we still had, and so, it’s going to be really fascinating to watch them play out in Marc and Steven’s storyline as we head to toward the end of the season. What are your theories/thoughts on the ending of episode four?
